Let's be honest here

I want everyone's honest opinion. No sugarcoating, no going with popular opinion, just tell it how it is!

I'm still pretty young. I'm 26.

I'm in decent shape. I don't think my body is spectacular, but I also know that I look alright. I don't have any major body issues. (besides the fact that I sure wouldn't mind if the girls were a little bigger!)

Up til now, I've always been a bikini wear-er. Nothing scandalous, or overly skimpy, mind you, but just your basic two piece swim suit.

However, I've got Isabelle's first swimming lesson session tonight, and for some reason, I'm having a big internal debate about wearing a two piece swimsuit. I mean, that's what I'll be wearing, as I don't own anything else, but I can't help but think that as a mom, it's just not appropriate anymore.

Which is weird, cause I've never felt that way before, and have gone swimming with Kaylee countless times in a bikini and never thought a thing about it.

But something about being at the YMCA, as a mother, in a bikini seems.....strange. Like I need to get a one piece suit, stat!

What do you think??

  1. I don't think wearing a bikini and you being a mom is strange. I personally wont wear one (I'm just not comfortable showing off my mommy belly) I think its a matter of what you are comfortable in. I know you and know you aren't wearing some skimpy string bikini. So I say wear what you are comfortable in.

  2. I think as long as there is plenty of coverage there is no reason for you to not wear a bikini. If you put it on and you are comfortable and happy you should rock your bikini and enjoy your time with your daughter.

  3. If I was as itty bitty as you are, I'd wear a two piece. Now granted there are some non-appropriate slutty two pieces out there but just being a two piece doesn't make it inappropriate. I'd say as long as its not too skimpy its fine. :) Rock it while you can!

  4. It's so funny, I was just talking about this exact same thing with my neighbor friend tonight! I actually tasked her to peer in on the Moms&Tots class and see what they are wearing. :)

I only own bikinis and my only "real" concern is that Faith will pull at my suit if she gets too excited and give everyone a show.

I hate one pieces, so a tankini might be a good compromise. I don't know, I feel like I run enough to earn the right to wear a bikini if I want :P

  5. personally...i'd get a sexy victoria's secret tankini. I just invested in one (with underwire b/c now, thanks to kye, i NEED that junk!) and it's a great suit to wear when swimming with kids. When I go to the beach just Zach and I, I still wear a bikini. But to ME something about having kids around makes me feel like I need to be in a tankini or one piece. It's not that I think it's inappropriate to wear a bikini, it's more that it's not practical. You're bending, you're running, you're doing all types of "mommy" things...there are a LOT of unflattering positions that do just not look good in a bikini :)

  6. maybe you could find a cute tankini? I feel like that would be a safe bet when you're not only concerned with swimming yourself but holding onto squirming Isabelle as well.

  7. I'm doing swim lessons with Alexandra in the summer and was totally thinking the same thing! I don't want to show up and be the slutty mom! But I also don't want to go and buy a one piece that I will never otherwise wear! Let us know what you decide and how it goes! Maybe all the moms will be in bikinis!

  9. yes i think it's an unwritten rule that moms should switch to a one-piece.

  10. I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in, its a 2 piece go for it, they do make killer one pieces these days, as for me I just dont like baiting suits at all, lol, I've always struggle for the right kind. But if I had a killer body I'd wear a 2 piece.

  11. No you do not girl, I'm 26 and I would never think it was inappropriate. I know I'm not a Mom, but I like to think I wouldn't care about wearing one. But, on the other hand, I think if you are uncomfortable, wear a one if it makes you feel better. Ha! basically I'm not help. Just do what makes you most comfortable though, no one would judge if you were in a 2 piece.

  12. I'd say go with what you're comfortable doing.

Just because you're a mom doesn't mean you have to throw away the 2-pieces, but there's also some really fun one-pieces out there too if you wanted to get something for certain occasions.

Either way... do what feels right to YOU. Everyone will have opinions, so go with what feels right.

  13. No way! Rock it girl! I mean, if it were a thong bikini, then I'd see an issue... but if you've got it flaunt it!

  14. I tend towards the one piece suits. Or two piece tankini that looks like a one piece (which is what I currently have). Just my opinion, but I feel more modest and appropriate that way, especially now that I'm a mom. I feel incredibly uncomfortable in a two-piece, and the thought of wearing something that may be a bit too revealing and leading someone else to sin (in their thoughts by the way they look at me)is on my mind as well and something I certainly wouldn't want to do. I think were we a more modest society, we would be a more chaste society, and when it comes to swimwear I just think it's best to err on the side of keeping a bit more covered.

Just my two cents since you asked. BLESSINGS!

  15. Hmm... Interesting question. I can't wait to hear what you decide to do! Although I don't think you have to do a one piece, by any means, there are some really cute one piece suits, especially this year!

  16. I personally don't own a one piece but my two piece usually cover me pretty well...So, I think it is a matter of what makes you comfortable because no matter what you wear people will judge. Tankini will be the best way to go if you are like me and don't like one piece :)

  17. Wear what you feel comfortable in. I've found that the tankinies work wonders actually. Go for it girl!

  18. I say wear whatever makes you feel good. If you've got the body for it and like the bikini, rock it! Having said that, I've worn a one piece since I had Jack simply b/c I felt better in it. But I don't think there's anything wrong with a mom in a two piece. Have fun! :)

  19. I'm team tankini- They are comfortable and in-between bikini and one piece, and it might come in handy for occasions when you don't wanna be super sexy (certain family gatherings or work functions that might come up one day, etc). I bought one when I worked as a PCA because I didn't feel comfortable in a bikini at work, even though I was only 21, and now I'm addicted to tankinis!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wear a tankini. You can get the ones with a shorter top, so you can still have your 2piece feeling, but have more coverage. I can't wear one-pieces, but I can't wear a 2 piece anymore either!

  21. This is a scandalous subject in the suburban midwest as well. And, we have yet to agree on a conclusion. Some say if you got it go for it...I say that Although I could rock a bikini, I dont want people staring, talking, teenagers or other people's husbands looking at my hot bod :) my body looks shows itself in jeans and a tee, and in a one piece at the public pool. With my husband at the beach or sunning with girlfriends I say two piece for sure, I just dont want to be a sexualized object in a family setting to any gender or age group. (following you back)

  22. ROCK it, girl!!! I'd totally sport a bikini if I didn't think it would scare all the swimmers away!

  24. Are you feeling this way because you've seen some of the other mom's and they don't wear one? If so is it because they can't pull it off? Wear what you are comfortable in..that's what it comes down to. If you're not going to be coomfortable in a two piece for the Y then get something else (I agree with a tankini..I don't like one pieces). I'm a new follower from Hop Along Friday. http://www.grandmasguidetolife.blogspot.com

  25. I'm of the opinion that if you can pull it off, you're good to go regardless. Unless there's something about the crowd that makes you feel like a bikini is inappropriate somehow??

  27. If you've got it, flaunt it. I wish I had realized this a few years back. Now at the ripe old age of 31, I need a bag. I am 35 weeks preggo but still :) I have had 5 pregnancies, 4 children and well, lets just say.....um, flaunt it momma!

  28. I say rock it momma! If you got, flaunt it! LOL!

  29. I've got to agree with Monica. It's definitely not an easy task (I still don't have a swimsuit that I really like/think is modest. It's a tankini - but the neck is v-neck and scoops too low for my comfort. It's near impossible to find a one piece or tankini that fits though with my tall torso.) I like to think of it like this: if you look at a swimsuit in a different light, like the fact that a bikini is essentially a bra and underwear (a sports bra at best) and then you think of going out in public in just your bra and underwear, no one would EVER do that (ok, some people might, but you get the idea.) So why it became socially acceptable to do that in the first place I have no idea.

Again though, it's just my two cents.

  30. Just stumbled across your blog and loved it! Too cute. I say go for what you are comfortable in. If you won't be comfortable in a bikini because of the looks you may get, then go one piece or tankini. It should be all about you though. New follower and just wanted to say hi = )

  32. If you feel comfortable wearing a bikini then I see no problem with it. Once I get my pre pregnancy body back I'll be going back to bikinis! :) I might even go buy a few new ones! lol

  33. I wanted to comment on this last night, but I was reading via Reader on my phone, so it didn't happen! But anywho, I think you should wear whatever you want to wear and are comfortable in. Seriously. And I say if you've got the body you should flaunt it...in a tasteful manner of course! Which I have no doubt that the one you have is just fine!

    ReplyDelete
  34. My two cents on this is that you have it, flaunt it. Too quickly our bodies get old and sag in places we don't want them to. And I think if your 80-year-old self were talking to you right now... she would tell you to absolutely wear that 2-piece as long as you can!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wear it! Those other mom just don't because the probably can't. When you work hard to be in shape and healthy what fun is it if you never get to enjoy the benefits! Wear it for me! Cause I am too gutless. Ha! ;)

  36. I am super late here on this post--but, you are too cute to NOT wear a bikini! I have seen 50 year old (moms) wear a bikini and look great. Wear it, wear it, wear it.

  37. If you've got it, flaunt it!

My mom is in her 40s and still wears a two piece!
